What makes Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirts the best on the market?

Read on below, but to summarize, we've tried them all. And there is no comparison, period. Its not just about the cooling, which is very impressive in its own right. Its about the fabric. The Cool Human® Nylon6.6 fabric is so thin that any gentle breeze can get under it, feeling very pleasant. But don't mistake thin for cheap. Its extremely dense, so no worries about see-through or showing things you dont want to show. It dries insanely fast. And its probably the most comfortble fabric in the heat that you have ever tried. You will want to sleep in this fabric during hot nights!  Read on below for details!

Endothermic Cooling: Its just science
Almost every “cooling shirt” out there works by the same principle: evaporation. Sweat is wicked away from the body to the outside, and the wind evaporates it, thus cooling the wearer.

But we wanted something better. Something that works beyond evaporative cooling, even in high humidity or low wind environments where evaporative cooling doesn't work.

Enter Xylitol, an all-natural sweetener sugar alcohol found in some fruits, white birch and corn.

Picture
You've most likely added xylitol to your coffee or experienced the fresh cool feeling of it in toothpaste or gum.
.
This is what happens when you put xylitol in water. Keep your eye on the thermometer readout.
The temperature drops!! This is called an endothermic (heat absorbing) reaction. The reaction draws heat from the surroundings, thus lowering the temperature.

So,
Picture
Wouldn't it be amazing to put this natural compound onto a shirt so that when you sweat, the water in your sweat reacts with the xylitol in an endothermic reaction to make you feel cooler?

This is exactly what we have done with the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt.

It's not just about the xylitol.

In our quest to make the perfect cooling shirt, we tested many xylitol-infused shirts. Some had xylitol printed onto the fabric, others had chemical treatment on the finished fabric.  Despite all the hype surrounding these shirts and all the nice packaging, they were ultimately not much better than normal shirts. Then about 3 years ago, we tried a shirt from Japan during one of the country's infamous 40 degree heatwaves. We were blown away by the results.  Since then, not only have we duplicated that amazing cooling feeling, we've exceeded it beyond expectations by improving on the fabric. It is this fabric that makes the cooling shirt exceptional. It is very light but dense, comfortable enough to sleep in, and loose so as to allow air to circulate on the inside. This combined with the xylitol treatment bring you the ultimate comfort/cooling effect.

How does it work?

Infused in the fabric itself during production is xylitol, which absorbs heat from the wearer's skin in an endothermic reaction caused by the water in your very own sweat (Perspiractive™ technology). So the hotter and sweatier you get, the cooler your shirt feels.

Revolutionary smart-release micro-vesicle delivery system

The cooling technology of the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt comes from multi-layered micro-vesicles (microscopic sized balls containing multiple oil and water phases) that are able to sense the level of moisture from the body based on the environment, and act accordingly to cool you.
Picture

Micro-vesicles have an oil phase containing "water-hating" molecules like squalane, and a water phase with water loving molecules like the cooling xylitol.

When the fabric is dried and is made into garments this water layer becomes dehydrated and the xylitol is inactive.

However, when the wearer starts to sweat the water layers rehydrate and then the  xylitol dissolves and is released and the cooling reaction begins.

The cooling sensation occurs only where the sweat or moisture is. After some time, the wearer will start to cool down and should stop sweating.

As the garment dries out, the reaction stops and goes back to the dehydrated state again.

This process can be seen in the movie on the right.

Sweat-activated Perspiractive™ fabric with real endothermic cooling

Picture

The thermographs on the left show a clear difference in shirt temperature before and after hard exercise where xylitol is present, when the water in the wearer's sweat reacts with the xylitol  in a cooling endothermic reaction.

Removal of the shirt after hard exercise also shows that the cooling is not just limited to the shirt fabric, the body is cooler as well.
To measure the amount of cooling generated by the micro-vesicle technology, the temperature of the fabric was measured after adding water. The results shown in the graph indicate that the initial temperature was as much as 5 degrees C (9 degrees F) lower than untreated fabric before washing.
Due to the slow-release properties of this technology, the cooling effect was retained; the xylitol decreased the temperature of the fabric by 3.5 degrees C (6.3 degrees F) even after 50 washes.

Cooling regardless of external conditions

Because the surrounding heat is consumed in the endothermic reaction, the feeling of the fabric against the skin is cool, regardless of whether or not there is any outside wind. So you even get cooling under conditions in which evaporative cooling shirts don’t work, such as high humidity, indoors, or when there is little wind.

Skin protective function

Picture

Additional components in the micro-vesicles shown earlier include squalane, a hydrogenated form of a moisturizer produced naturally by your own skin cells in the skin lipid layer but that declines with normal aging. It is commonly extracted from plants such as olives.

Squalane reduces inflammation and keeps the skin hydrated and fresh.

And Silk Protein, a natural protein obtained from natural silk noils (fibers, fibroin) from the cocoon of the silk worm. This produces excellent moisture binding properties & a silky smooth feel.

Cool Human® perspiractive™ fabric: Comfort through moisture retention and release

Just as with the control of "smart" cooling based on the environment, the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt offers "smart" moisture management via these same micro-vesicles.

Moisture retention when its dry

Picture

In a dry environment, the water phase is dehydrated. As moisture is released from the skin in the form of sweat, the micro-vesicle absorbs it and becomes rehydrated. The increased humidity of the garment allows for increased comfort.

Excess moisture release when its humid

When humidity between the skin and the fabric increases to excess due to exercise or sweating, the micelle structure becomes saturated. Because the outermost layer of the micelle is hydrophobic (water-hating), it repels the excess moisture and pushes it out of the fabric.

FABRIC PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Impressive as it is, the finishing technology of the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt that gives the shirt its amazing cooling and moisture management properties is only half the story. The fabric production technology is just as important.

Nylon6.6

Picture

The Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt  is made with Nylon6.6, also known as the "cotton alternative."
Nylon6.6 garments are softer and lighter than most other fabrics and feel very comfortable next to the skin.

Nylon6.6 absorbs water much more quickly than cotton and spreads out over the fabric much more, which allows for the faster drying. In fact, the fabric dries 8 times faster than cotton.
Picture
Picture
Nylon6.6 is also three times stronger than natural fabrics such as cotton. This ensures enhanced durability and comfort that exceeds natural materials. The Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt offers 4-way stretch to ensure ease of motion.
Due to the extreme stretchiness of the fabric, for freedom of body movement, the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt can be worn loose or tight one size down based on the preference of the wearer.

Super-high 50 gauge weave

Gauge is simply the number of needles per unit of length. Low gauge fabrics have a very loose weave. They don’t last very long and easily become damaged.
Picture
The fabric for the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt is made from fine ultra-high gauge fabric (50 gauge). In fact, this is one of the highest gauges of fabric available in the world for its weight. This not only makes the fabric ultra strong, allowing your garment to live for twice the lifetime of a normal garment, thus saving you money, but it also provides more square area for xylitol to bind, thus increasing the cooling effect and cooling duration.
And it feels amazing too!

A "Tribrid" Shirt you can use for the office, travel, or gym.

The fabric is wafer thin, but the super-high gauge fabric allows for multi-purpose use. Because the gauge is so high, its not as transparent as other fabrics are at even 100 grams/meter. This means that you can wear it as a T-shirt as well as an undershirt or base layer with almost no added bulk!
Picture

UV-cut

Due to its extremely high 50 gauge construction, Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt fabric is certified as UPF15 for sun protection. Despite being so thin, it blocks out around 96% of the harmful UV rays of the sun. A typical cotton T-shirt is only at about UPF5.

Strong and Abrasion-resistant

At 80 grams/meter, the fabric is wafer thin, but don't mistake that for being weak. Due to its high gauge and Nylon6.6 construction, it’s extremely strong and dense.  This streamlines your body for optimum sports performance and maximizes comfort when you need to be most active.

Super-light

Picture

Yarn from the fabric of the Cool Human® Endothermic Cooling Shirt is only 20 denier. This is equivalent to 9,000 meters (29,528 feet) of yarn weighing just 20 grams (0.7 oz.).

Packs small and light

Roughly 25% lower volume and weight than typical undershirts and 40% lower than typical T-shirts.

Anti-bacterial/anti-viral properties

In addition to Squalane and xylitol, the micro-vesicles also contain anti-bacterial agents such as undecynol monoglyceride, which help to limit the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Moreover, xylitol has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria (uptake of xylitol occurs in both gram positive and gram negative bacteria). It also inhibits RSA (respiratory syncytial virus, an enveloped RNA virus), and therefore could possibly have killing effects on other viruses as well.

Safety and Sustainably

Safe. Our fabric processing with xylitol, an odorless natural compound, complies with OEKOTEX safety standards, and thus, our fabric processing is head and shoulders above other cooling treatments that use synthetic and foul-smelling chemicals to achieve the same effect for a much shorter duration.
Sustainable. In addition, our fabric processing is compliant with ZDHC guidelines for the use of safer chemistry for a cleaner planet.  The ZDHC Foundation oversees implementation of the Roadmap to Zero Programme. We, along with them, believe in a world where things are made with zero use and discharge of hazardous chemicals.
Picture
Additionally, we optimize fabric usage to ensure that the width of the fabric during production is optimum so fabric waste is minimized to the greatest extent possible.  Fabric waste is one of the biggest problems in the garment business, with up to 20 tonnes of fabric going into landfills per year.
Minimization of environmental effect. The use of super-high gauge fabric means increased garment durability, which means an increased garment lifetime and decreased waste.
Responsible water-saving. Because of xylitol’s inherent antifungal and antibacterial properties, you don’t need to wash the shirt as much as other shirts, thus increasing the life of the shirt, increasing the durability of the cooling effect, and saving valuable water.
